Remember and Heal the Id, Ego and Superego
When talking about the id, the ego, and the superego, it is important to remember that these are not three separate entities with clearly defined boundaries. These aspects are dynamic and always interacting to influence an individual's overall personality and behavior. With many competing forces upon three intertwined aspects of personality, it is easy to see how conflict can arise within us.
According to Freud, the key to a healthy personality is a balance between the id, the ego, and the superego, and any imbalance between these would create a “maladaptive personality.” An overly dominant id may create impulsive and uncontrollable personalities where one acts upon their basic urges with little to no concern for whether their behavior is appropriate, or even legal. An overly dominant superego may create an extremely moralistic and judgmental beliefs where anything and anyone can be perceived as “bad” or “immoral.” Our life’s experiences can cause one aspect to become more dominant than the others, but we are not stuck this way. We can always shift and become balanced with conscious intention and effort.
By remembering we have these multiple aspects within us and showing all of them love, equally, we can achieve balance within ourselves and heal the behaviors and response mechanisms we created out of childhood trauma. Understanding ourselves fully can be a “scary”, or rather “unfamiliar”, experience but it is one of the most rewarding things to accomplish as ‘everything else’ falls into place after. Life has shaped us all, but it does not have to define us for life as we are energetic beings capable of shifting in more ways than one.
